2026 Race Recap

2026 was the 21st Annual Missouri River 340. People born when this race started can now legally drink. Several people that were in that first race competed this year. This race has changed a LOT. But the heart of it remains the Missouri River, the communities along its bank and the evolving community of people challenging themselves in this race. The MR340 is hosted by nonprofit Missouri River Relief, who is dedicated to transforming people's relationship with the Missouri River through education programs, river cleanups and recreation.

This year's race began with a cool drizzle. A welcome change from the 100-degree heat of Race Check-In the day before. This year was a low river: 9.7 feet on the Kansas City gage (43 kcfs). People felt that low, slow river all week, and it's reflected in some of the finish times and potentially the large DNF percentage. Overall, we had amazing weather for this race. Things were a bit steamy day one, but good cloud cover was a relief. Regardless, heat was an issue for many racers as it always is. This was the first year in a long time where fog was not an issue. On Friday morning, racers experienced intense heavy rain for a couple of hours. Forecasted strong storms in the late afternoon convinced race organizers to stop the race at Klondike for those still upstream of there at 2 pm (it impacted about 8 racers).

Our Governor's Cup-winning boat (the fastest time overall) was "River Hawk Boat Shop", an 8-person Voyageur selected from the ranks of the MR340 elite. They killed it with a time of 38:18, the only sub-40 finish of the race. Second place overall went to the Mixed Tandem Paddle team of Brian Jones and Kristin Miller "Going Concern" with a time of 43:22. This is the first time since 2017 that mixed tandem was second overall - that team also included Brian Jones! An absolutely incredible finish from those two.

Outstanding performance from the 4-person Team "4 Non Blondes" who finished in 43:39. "Gemini" (Dylan McHardy and first-timer Cody McHardy) and "Canoe Believe It?" (Chris DeLong, Taylor Hering) battled it out in Mens Tandem Paddle with respective times of 44:20 and 45:20.

The first solo to the beach was Lauren Rodriquez in Solo Rowing. She also set the course record for Solo Rowing with a time of 46:08, shaving 40 min off the previous record. This was the second year in a row the first solo finisher was a woman.

The top 3 Men Solo Paddle boats battled it out and all finished within a few minutes of each other. Gregg Peters "Kilted Psycho" finished first with a time of 47:29. The Duelling Peters hit the beach 8 minutes later: Pete Larson "Because 2,341 Miles Wasn't Enough" and Peter Neichter arrived 8 minutes later with respective times of 47:37:11 and 47:37:34. Pete Larson, just a month earlier, had completed an epic journey paddling the entire Missouri River setting the solo unsupported record of 32 days, 6 hours, and 7 minutes.

Other crowd favorites included the Water Moccasins, a five-person Voyageur (Jim Hall, Diana Hall, Juniper Reilly, Jeffrey Clouse, Skylyn Jones) which included our youngest racers: 12 year-old Juniper Reilly and 13 year-old Diana Hall - in her 4th MR340. They finished in 79:40. People were also fascinated by the 4-person Team "The Metal Goose" (Nathan Goossen, Andrew Goossen, Andrew Wiebe, Elwyn Goossen) who paddled a handcrafted aluminum boat made from a boat pontoon. They powered through with a 77:28 finish.

Tears were shed when Bonner Scott's family surprised him at the Hermann checkpoint in the middle of the night. Check out the photos here. There was another super sweet moment when three SUP paddlers decided to finish at the same time, tying for third place in Mens solo SUP - Brian Davidson, Nabeel Saleh & Steve Perez.

The threat of intense severe storms Friday afternoon caused race organizers to stop the race at 2:00 pm at Klondike for those upstream of there. Those racers were given complete finishes and their time reflects the RaceOwl projection for their finish. We also moved the Awards Ceremony forward to accomodate the predicted weather. The storms did not materialize.

Over 200 tireless, cheerful volunteers provided support to this epic race. Our deepest gratitude to all of you! We have the highest respect for the amazing Ground Crews that gave your racers all that they needed. Congratulations to all of you that finished this punishing but transformative race. You all earn our highest regards.
